Back
from the PI!
By Tim Hartman
====================
On
April 18, 2007 I set out for my first trip to the
Philippines. It didn’t start out well with
my first flight being cancelled because they “LOST” the
flight crew. How the heck do you lose a flight crew?
After a little creative booking I was on my way to
San Francisco to meet up with PG Rick Manglinong
and his group. Over 25+ hours later, we arrived in
Manila.
Our
first two days were spent site seeing and souvenir
shopping for our families. Our third day we were
up at 4AM to catch a flight to the province of Negros
Occidental for the IPMAF Training Camp. From the
airport we had a very exciting trip to the Presas
resort. It seemed that the traffic rules were more
of a suggestion than a rule, and our drivers seemed
to be racing to see who could get to our destination
first. Fortunately being in the back of the bus,
I didn’t get to see many of the close calls
we actually had. Although I realized very quickly
that you needed to keep your arms and legs inside
the vehicle to prevent them from being taken off
by passing vehicles.
After
arriving at the camp, the first job was to figure
out which of the bungalows we would stay in. Our
group was very lucky to find one right on the beach
with a nice cool breeze and a stellar view of the
water. Seeing that it was still Sunday, there were
no planned activities, so I took this time to meet
some of my fellow campers as well as walking the
beach that my teacher (the late Grandmaster Remy
Presas) grew up on.
I
was told that this was the largest camp that IPMAF
hosted in the Philippines. I met people from Australia,
Poland, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Israel, Philippines
as well as my home country, the United States. Everyone
was very friendly and helpful during this camp. At
the end of the first night of training, Grandmaster
Ernesto Presas initiated the FMA Hall of Fame induction
ceremony. Many people were honored from our past
as well as our present. Three of us (PG Myrlino Hufana,
PG Rick Manglinong and I) who had studied with GM
Ernesto’s late brother were honored with the
Kampilan Award. PG Manglinong and I were awarded
9th degree black belts in Kombatan and I was shocked
when GM Ernesto introduced us as Grandmaster Manglinong
and Grandmaster Hartman.
During
that evening, I had the pleasure of meeting the youngest
of the Presas brothers – GM Roberto. Unfortunately
I did not have the opportunity to spend much time
with him, but it was very obviously to me as to how
much he and his brother cared for each other.
There
was much activity during the camp. We had three training
sessions throughout the day. In between sessions,
people were working out, and I actually ended up
teaching private lessons on how Balintawak relates
to Modern Arnis to the group from Poland. Throughout
all of this, GM Ernesto was busy filming his movie.
Unfortunately since I only spent one weekend at the
camp, I was unable to be worked into the movie, but
many of the top instructors, including my traveling
companion PG Manglinong, had fairly large parts in
the movie. I am not going to ruin the surprise about
the story line, but I will say this, there is plenty
of stick fighting, so much that they were shooting
until past 1AM banging sticks.
The
training was very good and during my stay at camp,
I only missed two sessions, both of which were spent
visiting GM Remy’s grave. The first visit was
with GMs Simba and Manglinong. This visit affected
me more than I anticipated. I had visited my own
family members many times in their respective cemeteries,
but never had such intense emotions.
At
the end of that week, I flew back to Manila with
Michael (GM Ernesto’s son-in-law). The last
few days of my trip were used to do last minute shopping
for those back home as well as meeting with the masters
in Rizal Park. One person I went to visit surprised
me when I went to his training area. This was Rodel
Dagooc. I had met him a few years prior in the States
while he was touring with the Presas children. I
was trying to be inconspicuous while watching his
training session. Of course, this didn’t work.
Not only do I not have a tan, I am fairly taller
than most of the people who were there that day.
When Rodel saw me, he stopped his class, introduced
me as one of the American datus, and even had me
do a demonstration on the WMAA disarming template.
There
were many, many other experiences I had during my
trip. Trying to address them all here would simply
not do them justice. The people, the country, … my
whole trip was a life altering experience. I valued
this trip so much that in 2009, GM Manglinong and
I will be bringing our WMAA family to the Philippines.
In
closing, I would like to thank all of those whom
I mentioned as well as those whom I did not for their
hospitality during my stay.

WMAA Camp Review by Guro Jeff Leader
The
2007 WMAA Camp was held 8-10 June in West Seneca,
NY. It was a great success and a great time for all!
We had participants from at least Indiana, Ohio,
Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, California, and
Ontario, Canada (and probably more regions that I've
missed).
As
usual, those who were there Thursday night participated
in some extra training, after which we went out for
wings and such. Early Friday afternoon is when the
actual camp started with some opening remarks by
Datu Tim Hartman, followed by a session on Kombatan
by Grandmaster Rick Manglinong. He started with double
stick striking and sinawalis then continued into
various aspects of Kombatan. Throughout his sessions
the sinawalis were emphasized.
Throughout
Friday afternoon and evening, Saturday afternoon
and early evening, and Sunday morning until 1PM,
sessions were taught by Grandmasters Manglinong and
Hartman and by Punong Guros Jeff Leader (that's me),
Steve Scott, and Sal Todaro. Datu Hartman covered
a range of topics, including striking styles (banda
y banda, rompida, etc.), espada y daga, sumbrada
(six count drill), crossada flow (knife and empty
hand), and other areas. His sessions mixed weapons
(stick, knife, sword, empty hand) and addressed self-defense,
sparring, the history of the arts, and so on. Mr.
Scott discussed lock flow, bringing in his detailed
knowledge of how small differences in technique can
have a large effect. His analytic and anatomical
approach, combined with his multiple perspectives
on the subject from different arts studied, gave
everyone a real education in locks. Mr. Todaro taught
stick disarms, first reviewing the classics and then
giving the participants even more disarming options.
His sessions generated much enthusiastic discussion
among even advanced practitioners about the novel
variants he showed and the fine technical details
he elucidated. My sessions discussed empty hand against
the knife, including hubbud and palusut training
drills. The focus was on what to do against a slightly
more sophisticated or aggressive knifer than the
basic techniques assume, and what to do when an attempt
to disarm goes wrong.
Saturday
morning was the black belt test. I'm pleased to say
that the next morning the WMAA promoted six candidates
to Lakan Isa/Dayang Isa (first degree black belt),
and two other candidates (Guro George Harris and
Guro Dr. Mike Milazzo) to Lakan Apat (fourth degree
black belt). This is in addition to the promotions
to Lakan Lima (fifth degree black belt) and Punong
Guro that were made the night before camp opened.
Lunch
Saturday was at the same Chinese buffet as in previous
years, but the Saturday evening sit-down meal was
replaced this year with a picnic hosted by Datu Hartman
and Guro Janice Stranc at their house. It was a great
deal of fun, with good food and good conversation.
As usual, their three over-sized and very friendly
dogs (Thor, Loki, and Bear) were the main topic of
conversation!
After
the camp closed we had the traditional open sparring
session for those who chose to participate. Many
people lingered to chat, discuss techniques, or go
to lunch before leaving town.
As
always, there are many people to thank and I fear
I'll miss someone. But let me mention Datu Hartman
and Guro Stranc for doing the voluminous amount of
work that must be done to organize and host the event;
Grandmaster Manglinong for flying in from California
to teach us and bringing his infectious enthusiasm
and upbeat spirit; Punong Guros Scott and Todaro
for their well-prepared and well-received sessions
and their help throughout the camp; Bob Hubbard for
his wonderful photography, and Susan Spann for her
assistance; and most importantly, everyone who came
to camp and helped make it the success it was! I
enjoyed meeting many new people, including our own
tswolfman, at the camp, as well as seeing old faces.
I particularly want to acknowledge Guros Jason Arnold,
Paul Dawdy, and Rich Parsons for traveling all the
way to the camp then being willing to help while
there.
Thanks
to everyone for another great year!

Camp
Notes from Datu Tim Hartman
Greetings-
It
has been a very hectic year for me and sometimes
my responses online end up being “One liners”.
This year’s training camp had much significance
to it. We had belt promotions, updated curriculum
release, announcing the up and coming trip to the
Philippines and the announcing of a new direction
and alliance for the WMAA.
- This
camp had the largest group of Black Belt promotions.
Nick Hawley, Dennis Jenner, DJ Leader, Fern Monti,
Ryan Monopolus and Mike McDonough all tested and
were promoted to 1st degree Black Belts, along
with George Harris and Mike Milazzo testing and
promoted to 4th degree Black Belt. In addition
to these promotions, members of the WMAA board
(Dr. Jeff Leader, Steve Scott and Sal Todaro) were
promoted to Punong-Guro 5th degree Black Belt.
- We
have announced that in 2009 Grandmaster Manglinong
and I will be taking a group to the Philippines.
In addition to sightseeing, there will be opportunities
to train with several masters, including GM Ernesto
Presas. Our upcoming seminar camp series will dedicate
portions of the events to prep people who are considering
accompanying us on this trip.
- With
the success of our trip to the Philippines, the
board members and I have decided to broaden the
vision of our organization. Our organization will
always be dedicated to the teachings of the late
Grandmaster Remy Presas. We have also decided to
look deeper into roots of the system and incorporate
more of the family art. With the release of our
WMAA curriculum 4.0 we are taking the steps of
giving our members a better understanding of its
origins.
Once
again I would like to thank all those who were mentioned
(and all those who weren’t) on the success
of this year’s training camp. Many things have
happened this year and there is much more to come.
We have already started preparation for next year’s
camp. It will be June 6 through 8, 2008. Hope to
see you there.

NY MartialTalk/KenpoTalk/FMATalk/WNYMA Meet & Greet
August 3-4, 2007: Buffalo NY
Well, this years event has come to a close. We had 34 attendees, making
this our largest event ever. People came from Massachusetts, Texas,
Michigan, West Virginia, Ohio, Ontario and more this year. My mind
is as usual, fried right now, so I'll just touch on the high lights
of this years event.
Friday night
we met up at the hotel before heading out to Pizza Plant for some local
cuisine, then back to the hotel for more relaxed networking.
Saturday
was the official training day. I want to thank this years instructors
for their time and wonderful sessions.
We started
things out with Terry & Yolanda Stoker from Texas, who ran everyone
through some interesting warm ups and techniques that they use in their
school. They were followed by Daniel Tesmer (Drac) & Steven Fine
(Father Greek) from Ohio who demonstrated some of the techniques police
use to control a subject, and did some Combat Hapkido. Third up was
local Wing Chun instructor Mark Stoddard who went over some of the
techniques and concepts of Wing Chun. Forth was Tom Quinn from NY who
did some excellent Nihon Goshin Aikido. Fifth was Rich Parsons from
Michigan who taught Modern Arnis, Sixth was Jason Arnold from Ontario,
Canada who taught Parkers Kenpo, and we closed out with Jack Latorre
who did Pekiti Tirsia.
After a
short break where several of us helped dismantle the training floor
and move it to the schools new location, we headed out to the buffet
for crab, sushi and more. Then, back to the hotel where the last person
didn't head to bed until after 1am.
From what
I've seen and heard so far, this was our best M&G yet. I personally
want to thank each and everyone who came for making this a huge success!
It was a pleasure finally meeting so many of you and seeing others
again.
If you missed
it, you missed some excellent training and comradery, but don't despair.
We're doing it again next year and you can schedule early.
The 2008
MartialTalk-KenpoTalk-FMATalk-WNYMartialArts Meet & Greet will
be held July 18,19,20th 2008 in Buffalo NY. We have 2 tentative instructors
already listed for next year as well. Jason Arnold and Jack Latorre.
So mark your calendars now!
Thank you
again!

This three day training camp featuring Datu Hartman.
Punong
Guro Sal Todaro
Camp
was great. It was a small group of experienced people
so we were able to cover a lot of high end material.
We weren't on a rigid schedule so there was plenty
of time for just hanging out. Guro Janice and Datu
Tim were excellent hosts as always but considering
the fact their school is in the middle of moving
into a new and larger facility, we appreciated their
efforts all the more. The new building is fantastic.
At
the conclusion of the camp, Marion Kellogg and Sam
Wolf were promoted to the rank of Black Belt in Modern
Arnis. I would like to congratulate them. They are
two very talented and special people and deserving
of the Lakan and Dayang titles. We are proud to have
them in our organization.
I
always enjoy the big camps but these small group
camps are special. Personally I don't think it gets
any better than that.

I
too want to thank Mr. Hartman and Ms. Stranc for hosting
us during this stressful time as they move their entire
school! This was a lot of fun. We covered some Kombatan,
some Balintawak, and of course Modern Arnis! We had
a wonderful dinner out in downtown Buffalo, and it
was great to see the promotions of Ms. Kellogg and
Mr. Wolf. They brought great energy to the camp. Seeing
both the local WNY instructors and people like Mr.
Todaro and Mr. Scott makes for a very satisfying event.
