Does not play well with others.

Does not play well with others.

I recently was talking to Dan Anderson about why most of the Modern Arnis world wasn’t getting along with each other. We went back and forth with different ideas. Shortly afterwards while Master Jeff Espinous was visiting my school in Buffalo, one of my long distance students who was visiting at the same time, pointed out that for someone (me) who doesn’t get along with people I sure do have alot of friends! This made me think about the discussion I had with Mr. Anderson (not the one from the Matrix 😉 ).

Why doesn’t alot of the members of the Modern Arnis community get along? Easy, Remy brought together a number of people who wouldn’t normally associate with each other. This doesn’t make anyone a bad guy, although I do like wearing black. This is the same in a family. Not all brothers and sisters get a long. This doesn’t make them bad people.  Some personalities just don’t mix.

So do I get along with anyone? Most definitely. Many people and organizations in the martial artist community. This is why you see members of the WMAA as well as myself being invited to teach at events with other groups around the world.

So the next time someone is accused of not getting along with others take my advise before making up your mind. First, consider the source. Second, do your own research and see who they do get along with. You may be surprised with want you find out. The third is the most important. Make up your own mind and don’t bow down to peer pressure. If you choose not to like someone make sure it’s not because your friends and or associates don’t like someone.

This is what happens when I’m stuck on a plane flying home with nothing to do for hours 😉

Respectfully yours,
Tim Hartman

GM Abrescy passes on a Presas heirloom

GM Abrescy passes on a Presas heirloom

I got a double treat today at “the Gathering”. I got to meet another long time friend of my teacher the late Remy A. Presas. We talked and share some stories about the old man. Just before starting the session I was teaching, Hanshi Juchnik called everyone to attention so GM Abrescy could make a presentation. I was shocked to find out that he had Remy’s stick bag and wanted to pass it on to me for all the work I’ve done spreading the family’s art. I am beyond words for once.

27th Black Belt Anniversary

27th Black Belt Anniversary

I’ve been practicing Filipino martial arts for over 30 years. When I walked in to my first Arnis lesson I had no clue what journey I began. Last weekend I taught at the Balintawak Legacy Gathering and this weekend I’ve visited White Tiger Taekwondo in North Carolina, and I’m currently in Norfolk Virginia for the 55 year anniversary of Lanada Kuntaw.

I have learned lessons both good and bad on this journey. I’ve made both good and bad decisions as well. As I look at my calendar in my hotel room I realize that today is the 27 year anniversary of being promoted to black belt by the late Grandmaster Remy Amador Presas.

This yearly anniversary is always bittersweet for me. I am proud of the accomplishments I have done in the name of Modern Arnis, but it also reminds me of my teacher friend an adopted father. I just hope that he knew how special he was in my life.

Sincerely,

The Datu

Defence Lab US Conference

Defence Lab US Conference

Last summer while teaching in Italy I got to meet a man named Andy Norman. He ran this organization called Defence Lab. I didn’t know much about him other than he had choreographed some of the fight scenes from Batman Begins.  After talking and working with him I decided I need to see more of his system. I was invited to be his guest at the US conference on June 6th and 7th in New York City. It had been awhile since I had a group outing for my people to attend to someone else’s event, so I decided to bring four of my people from the US & Canada.

From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with open arms. Made to feel part of the DL family! Not only did I get to participate in and these classes I also trained with Phil Norman of the ghost program as well as European legend Bob Breen currently teaching the 4D method. The training on Saturday was great and followed by one heck of a banquet.

Sunday’s training started Brighton early and I was asked to teach in the series of classes before and after lunch. I ended up teaching blade in the morning and stick in the afternoon. Once again with everyone’s varied styles and backgrounds it was refreshing to see how open minded all the practitioners were.

I want to think Andy Norman and his crew for inviting me to their event. I would also like to thank John and Mike from Defence Lab Lynbrook for the phenomenal job they did hosting the conference. I want to make a special thank you for William Hartke the Buffalo Defence Lab lead instructor who’s been helping my group and myself on learning fundamentals of their system. I’m looking forward to working with Defence Lab on some joint ventures in the future!
